Everywhere you go you make little traditions with the people around you. While at Purdue, my roommate and I made the tradition of celebrating the exceptionally good days and exceptionally bad days with the best reward there is: food. We decided to venture out of our comfort places and try a Midwestern favorite since 1953. Dog n Suds quickly became a personal fan favorite for my roommate and myself and here’s why!

The Atmosphere
As soon as we pulled up to the speakerphone where you order, it felt like we were transported in time. Although the car attendants don’t come on roller skates, that is the exact energy that this restaurant gives off. After sitting in the car for awhile trying to plan the perfect feast to celebrate our day, I hit the button to order the food. The service was fast and friendly, making this the perfect spot to relax and take it slow or be quick if you’re in a rush. You can choose to eat there or take your food to-go. We chose to eat our food in our car and within ten minutes the friendly car attendant brought it out on a tray!
The Food
Every time we go to a new restaurant, we have to order as much food as we can possibly consume. It’s only fair to try almost everything to get an accurate opinion! We started by ordering four of the five side options (french fries, breaded mushrooms, cheese curds and onion rings) as “appetizers.” It was perfectly fried food without a greasy aftertaste.
After we indulged on the sides, we began to eat our main course. In true Midwestern style, we just had to split a footlong hotdog. Even though we opted for the plain dog over the coney dog, it was still very flavorful. In addition to the hotdog, my roommate got the charco bacon cheeseburger and I ordered the breaded tenderloin. The showstopper of the whole event though was the root beer. I knew going into this that Dog n Suds was famous for its root beer, but as someone who loves root beer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I found though was the creamiest root bear I’ve ever had delivered in a cold frosted mug. It was an experience all in itself!
The Price
Being college students, affordability is something we heavily rely on in order to keep this tradition alive. Dog n Suds has a large menu with reasonable prices. The price of our feast surprised us—and in a good way!
On our next exceptionally good or exceptionally bad day, Dog n Suds will become a regular spot we visit. I’m already looking forward to my next sip of their root beer from a frosted mug!
