Welcome back to Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette's Embrace Your Roots Heritage Series, where our team takes pride in showcasing businesses that not only contribute to the uniqueness of our community but also thrive while honoring the diverse cultures that shape our shared identity. In observance of Black History Month, we have carefully selected two businesses that are proudly black-owned and led to feature in this blog. Our aim is to shed light on their impactful stories, reaching audiences who may not be familiar with their journeys. The intent is not only to commemorate their achievements during this month but to consistently share their narratives throughout the year, celebrating the lasting impact of their businesses.

Blooms and Petals

Paula Davis, the visionary behind Blooms and Petals, opened her doors 25 years ago fueled by pure passion, talent, and unwavering hard work. Over the course of these 25 years, Paula has transformed her establishment into a full-service floral shop, catering to weddings, anniversaries, funerals, special events, and more. Beyond adorning Greater Lafayette with her floral arrangements, Paula has a profound commitment to community service. Her journey as a business owner faced challenges, notably a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2005. Yet, Paula has consistently tackled challenges head-on, turning them into opportunities for creating something beautiful. Her extensive list of affiliations and accomplishments includes founding the Good Samaritan Project, being crowned Ms. Indiana Bodybuilding 2023, owning Fitness Xperience Gym & Spa, being a member of Rotary International, and belonging to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Rat Pak Venue/Event Services

Don Dennis embarked on his DJing journey at the age of 12, and when life led him to Lafayette, he began DJing around town. During his sets, he crossed paths with his future business partner Nick, and together they founded Rat Pak Mobile DJ Company. Later, when Rat Pak Venue became available, Don and Nick seized the opportunity and transformed it into what it is today. Rat Pak now offers DJ services, bar service, venue rentals, and a photography studio. Don emphasizes Rat Pak's commitment to representing underserved communities and providing a space for them to celebrate their culture and community. Rat Pak hosts a variety of events, including weddings, church services, Latin nights, drag brunches, Lafayette Symphony Orchestra performances, and more.

Black History is an integral part of Greater Lafayette's history, and our dedication to sharing these stories extends beyond a single month. We eagerly anticipate continuing to showcase diverse cultural narratives throughout the year. Join us as we embrace our roots and cherish the richness of diversity that defines Greater Lafayette!
