As a student living away from home, I often find myself missing the comfort of my own space, especially my room, which is overflowing with over 200 books (none of which have a proper shelf) and my ever-growing record collection that is practically a personality trait. I’ve learned to find comfort in small rituals, like flipping through crates of vinyls or browsing the shelves of old books after a long day of classes.
Purdue University Student, Noelle Clark, shares this blog. This blog is part of a series of articles submitted to Visit Lafayette-West Lafayette through a cooperation with a 400-level travel writing class at Purdue University.
Since I am a student, going to used bookstores and record stores lets me indulge in the media I love without breaking the bank. Whenever I travel somewhere new, I always seek out these types of shops; here are some of my favorites in the Greater Lafayette area.

JL Records:
My first stop was JL Records on the east side of Purdue’s campus. This eclectic shop is absolutely packed with records, CDs, memorabilia, DVDs, and video games – making it one of the largest inventories in the country, according to the JL Records’ Facebook page. The store has a lofted area filled with records, both new and used. The selection has something for every budget, with some records going for just $5. This store opened its doors in 1984, and it has built a lasting presence in the local music scene. I ended up leaving with three records and a heart full of good vibes.
Main Street Books:
My next stop was Main Street Books located in downtown Lafayette. It’s an independent bookstore with a charming cozy vibe that buys and sells new and used books. It’s intimate size and mellow lighting invite a slower pace to just wander and explore the shelves. It is super relaxed, with a great mix of genres and even a kids section full of graphic novels (great for my nieces when they visit)! I really enjoy supporting small businesses like this, especially ones that give old books a second chance! I ended up buying a thriller novel I’ve been wanting to read!

Black Wax Records:
Just further down the street is Black Wax Records, a store right in the heart of historic downtown Lafayette. Immediately when I walked in I was greeted by a 4-month-old border collie named Charlie and it made my entire week! Turns out she belongs to the owner of the store and Charlie hangs out at the shop quite often, so I definitely recommend this if you want the best welcome ever! The store itself has a smaller selection but occasionally has great sales on their used records. They also sell tye dye clothing, cassettes, and CDs.
Second Flight Books:
Located a little east to downtown Lafayette, this locally owned bookstore offers a really impressive selection with a charming vibe. The store itself is on the larger side, with a basement filled with more books. The space is well organized but has little nooks that make browsing feel more personal and cozy. They have a patio space with string lights where you can sit out and read and they also have a space inside the store where they hold events. I couldn’t help myself and left with two books!

Von’s Shop:
I thought I would end this journey with a Purdue classic, Von’s. Located on the east side of campus, Von’s offers both books and records as well as a delightful chaos of things you didn’t know you needed. The walls are lined with used books, and there is a basement section filled with books upon books upon books; it’s incredible. Their selection of vinyls is extensive, and they have a clearance section, making your one-stop used media splurge day very affordable.

After visiting all of these shops, I can confidently say that I have found little pockets of comfort. This experience allowed me to really slow down and walk away with more soundtracks and stories to add to my collection.
