If you think Memphis, Tennessee culture begins and ends on Beale Street, take a deeper dive into the river city’s distinctive flavor of music, art, and dance. In the last decade, artists like Lil Buck have promoted the city’s signature steps — dubbed Memphis Jookin’. In Memphis Jookin’: The Show, Buck choreographed a showcase of the dance style, known for its ankle-bending, gravity-defying, smooth footwork. He performs alongside 10 highly skilled dancers and a DJ to a soundtrack that evokes the energy of the streets, hallways, and clubs where the style was born. Buck first turned heads during his interpretative performance of “The Dying Swan,” accompanied by Yo-Yo Ma, and a memorable spot in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show — and has now taken Memphis Jookin’ all the way to the Kennedy Center.
