In celebration of Lafayette's Bicentennial, we recognize the difficult but essential history of the Underground Railroad. Join us for an afternoon that brings this history to life, inspired by the upcoming SAQA Quilt Show at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and supported by the General De Lafayette DAR. This special event will explore the intertwined roles of spirituals, quilting, and local figures in the fight for freedom.
Dr. James Dekle and the Underground Railroad Choir will perform spirituals, illustrating how these songs served as secret codes for escaping slaves. Diana Vice will highlight the courage of local figures like Freeman General Tootle and abolitionist Rebecca Ball, while Audrey Johnson of Of Thee I Sing will honor Rebecca Ball's legacy by performing two selections of Ball's poetry beautifully set to music of the Civil War Union composer George F. Root. Linda Sorensen will discuss the artistry of quilting, and Dr. Deanna McMillan will explain how quilts were used as hidden messages. Explore the art of Saundra Whiddon, whose pieces will be on display, that showcase moments from Lafayette's Underground Railroad
After the program, guests can visit the SAQA Quilt Show at the Art Museum and enjoy a catered reception. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up
