Weekend Update! Looking for a fun Indiana weekend getaway? Or do you live in this area and are looking for entertainment close by? Check out the endless possibilities for fun events happening this upcoming weekend in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.
On Friday, February 27, head to Purdue University to listen to the American Music Repertory Ensemble, featuring the music of the Gene Krupa Orchestra and Anita O’Day. Krupa began playing drums professionally in 1927 when he broke into the Chicago scene as a member of “Thelma Terry and Her Playboys,” the first notable co-ed American jazz band to be led by a female musician. He influenced the drum industry by endorsing Slingerland drums’s tom-tomAs with tuneable top and bottom heads and partnering with Armand Zildjian Company to develop the modern hi-hat cymbals. In 1978, Krupa became the first drummer inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. O’Day broke onto the jazz scene in the late 1930’s as a dynamic vocalist when she was hired to perform at Down Beat editor’s club, Off-Beat. She worked with jazz greats Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton. Do not miss this drumming fun night!

More music abounds at Nine Irish Brothers (both locations!) on Saturday, February 28! End the month off with a smashing good time with a performance by the Fighting Jamesons at Nine Irish Brothers in Lafayette. The Fighting Jamesons have quickly developed a strong national presence thanks to their updated versions of classic Irish and American folk songs, as well as a growing catalog of original tunes. They’ve shared the stage with legendary Irish rock acts such as the Dropkick Murphys, the Saw Doctors, and the Young Dubliners, and earned headlining slots in venues and festivals nationwide. Since releasing their self-titled debut album (produced and engineered by Capital Records recording artist Mark Padgett, “Mae”), they have stormed on to the live scene as one of Celtic Rock’s most sought-after groups.
