If you ask people what’s made Sgt. Preston’s of the North a downtown Lafayette staple since 1980, many would quickly tell you it’s the spacious outdoor patio. However, without a solid food & drink menu, friendly staff, awesome specials, and unique ambiance, Preston’s could not have survived this long. As someone who’s been both a customer and employee, I’m certain you’ll be able to find something to enjoy at Preston’s.
With bison, moose, deer and even a jackalope overseeing the guests with a birchbark canoe overhead, a tin ceiling and tiffany style lighting over the bar as part of the décor, Preston’s feels more like cozying up in a cabin than sitting down in a bar. Its comfortable feel is one of the reasons Preston’s doesn’t just have bar patrons, it has regular customers who love to come in either for a nice business lunch or after a long day. Boiler fans love coming to Preston’s in the fall and winter for the bus that goes to and from Purdue men’s basketball home games. You can park in the large parking lot or across the street in the garage and relax, as Preston’s will take care of your transportation to and from the game. Preston’s prides itself on having a friendly staff that is ready to serve you, whether it’s something from our extensive drink menu or a dish that goes beyond typical bar food.

If you’re the type who loves a good special, Preston’s always has one for you, whether it’s lunch or dinner. Monthly dinner specials are always changing as the cooks come up with different ways to satisfy your taste buds. There’s also always a beer of the month if you’re looking for a good deal. Aside from the monthly specials, Preston’s features daily food and drink specials, including the ever popular prime rib dinner on Saturday evening. Other daily specials rotate based on the time of year and feature everything you can imagine – seafood, steaks, chicken, and various appetizers – but you can always count on a delicious prime rib prepared just how you like it. My personal favorites are the smothered chicken entrée and the fiesta wrap.

As far as drinks, Preston’s is known for its Monday Schooner Night, featuring domestic draft refills for only $2.00 in your schooner or mini pitcher. Premium Well Brand mixed drinks are also available in schooners. Bring your own or buy one from the bar! The bar features 9 taps and carries a lot of popular selections from Bells, Three Floyds, and People’s. Plenty of bottled beer, wine, and a full bar are at your disposal to be served up by the friendly bartending staff. If you want to get little crazy, have a shot ski with your friends!
While Preston’s offers so much more than the patio, it is the patio that is the greatest draw. Pass through an old canal dock as you enter Preston’s extensive outdoor patio and enjoy your food and drink during a beautiful day. Live music is a regular occurrence on Saturday nights. During the summer months, Preston’s is open on Sundays and features a fun atmosphere with $1.50 tacos and outdoor games.
