Happening Now! Right now, the talk around town is about holiday shopping and finding the perfect gift to give a loved one over the holiday season. We are heading downtown to Something Special of Lafayette, where hand crafted jewelry, beautiful paintings, unique photography, and lotions/soaps can be admired and purchased! A group of local artists who specialize in their own special artistic craft have come together to create Something Special.

Linda Elmore is one of the artists at Something Special and she is usually the person you will greet when arriving at this business. She is one sweet woman who is so passionate about her art that it makes me envy her enthusiasm and magical ability to take a piece of glass and make it into something beautiful! There is one item on my Christmas list this year that is a must-have from Something Special. Linda makes these beautiful necklaces - a small glass pendant with a family photo emblazoned on it. I am going to get two of these made for my mother and mother in-law for Christmas with a photo of our daughter who was born in July. They are going to be ecstatic!

Something Special doesn't just offer creative glass pieces, but also, encaustic work (layers of beeswax- see photos to the left), photography and watercolor, oil and collage art. The gallery is filled with unique photos taken locally and from all over the world. I have found that every person is different in the way we enjoy art. Some of us love to fill our homes with artwork that is right in our own backyard where as others enjoy the beauty of faraway places. Personally, I love it all! In my own home, we have an oil-based painting of Paris that is the centerpiece of our living room and in another room we have photos of Mackey Arena and local Lafayette destinations. It makes me appreciate where I live and to dream of traveling to romantic destinations.
During Third Fridays and other festivals and events downtown, Something Special usually hosts artistic demonstrations. An example is during Dickens of Christmas, Jim Mailloux did a watercolors demonstration during the day. Visitors could enjoy watching, talking and learning from him during this special event.
