Happening Now! Summer time in Indiana means spending time out on the boat; fishing and relaxing in the summer heat. Lafayette-West Lafayette has not only the Wabash River running through it, but small lakes that offer visitors a chance to be outdoors and enjoy the art of fishing.
Every summer growing up my dad and uncle would take me fishing. I was a tomboy until I hit the age of 16, and anytime I could be outside playing and getting messy made me happy. Our summer fishing expedition was a big production at our house. The morning of our trip, we had to get up really early and search for worms. They usually are easy to find after a good rain, so if we were lucky, it would rain the night before. Our goal was to rough it as much as we could, and buying worms from the local tackle shop wasn't cutting it!
We would go to a different fishing lake every year to test our skills at catching fish. I remember one year, my dad had an antique hook that his grandfather used when he took him fishing years ago. I was so proud and excited to use it. I tied it up very tight with my line, swung my fishing rod back, flicked my wrist and away my line went. There was a splash from the heavy, old hook as it broke away from my line and traveled hundreds of feet to the bottom of the lake. My heart beat with nervousness, as I knew my dad would be sad to lose such a wonderful keepsake. But he just smiled and said "Well, I don't think the fish will be biting after that loud splash." We laughed and found his words to be true, as we came home that weekend with no large catches to brag about!
Fishing can be a very relaxing and fun way to spend the day. There are a number of great lakes in the Lafayette-West Lafayette area where visitors can sit back and enjoy throwing in a line and make some memories. For me, it was a bonding experience I had with my dad that has created a slew of wonderful memories. I suggest taking a day out of your busy lives to enjoy the relaxation of fishing and creating your own special memories.
