Did you know 45 minutes north of Lafayette-West Lafayette is home to one of the United States largest dairies? Fair Oaks Dairy is a working farm that lets visitors experience how a dairy farm is operated while also giving guests a chance to sample and eat all the wonderful products that come from dairy cows. Two thoughts enter my brain when I think of Fair Oaks Dairy; adventure and cheese! You may ask, what is so adventurous about a dairy farm. This dairy welcomes guests to see the inner workings of how a 24,000 plus dairy farm works. Visitors not only watch a 4D one of a kind movie experience, but tour their world-famous birthing barn and dairy milking center. Over 80 calves are born each day and guests can watch as new life enters this world. The milking process is a like a well-oiled machine. The cows are lined up in a circular barn and they stand in line to wait their turn to be milked. The cows remind me of people waiting in line patiently until their turn is called. It is a ritual of sorts. Cheese. Goodness, Fair Oaks creates some of the best dairy products! They have a Cheese Factory where visitors can see how cheese is made, and also taste all the different cheeses they create. They have won national awards for their goods. Their sweet Swiss cheese is creamy and light. Also, they have a café where diners can purchase their signature grilled cheese sandwich with a side of their specialty soup. Visitors can sit back, munch on their lunch, while watching as workers make cheese. Vacation, Relaxation, Fun; one image that comes into our heads is sand, sun and water. Locals travel south to find their peace and quiet, while adventure, history, the arts and entertainment, and more, can be found in our own backyard. Visit Fair Oaks Dairy for an amazing adventure into dairy production!
