2 fabulous events are taking place this weekend at the Lafayette Theater! On Friday, February 26, the world-class improvisational funk band, The Motet, performs. This band has dedicated more than a decade to the healing powers of funky dance music. Although the early years of the band saw a constantly revolving cast of musicians, the most recent incarnation has been touring the country for the last several years developing a new and unique style with roots in funk, afrobeat, disco, electronic music, and soul. This new Motet has quickly gained a reputation for throwing infectious dance parties everywhere they go, creating a deep rapport between band and audience.
The following evening at the Lafayette Theater, enjoy a totally different style of music as Ethiopian-born, Brooklyn-raised, and Bay Area-nurtured, Meklit Hadero performs. Meklit describes herself as an in-betweener living along musical hyphen lines. She is a folk-jazz-global roots singer, musician, and cultural activist. San Francisco Chronicle describes her, "Meklit is an artistic giant in the early stages… She is stunning."
More arts abound in West Lafayette! On Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday, head to the Nancy T. Hansen Theatre Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts to enjoy a The Liar. Hours after arriving in Paris, the charismatic Dorante is smitten by a pair of comely young ladies and confounded by a case of mistaken identity. Not to worry, this scoundrel is handsome, charming and a pathological liar. He wins admirers wherever he goes so long as he never has to tell the truth! Misunderstandings, secret agendas, and witty wordplay abound in this delightfully ingenious and irreverent update of a classic French romp.
